Incontinence

Involuntary urination. Classifications include:

  • Stress incontinence: incontinence when pressure is exerted on the bladder, such as when exercising or sneezing.
  • Urge incontinence: a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by incontinence. Causes include infection, neurological disorders, and diabetes.
  • Overflow incontinence: frequent or constantly dribbling urine due to a bladder that never fully empties.
  • Functional incontinence: an inability to reach a toilet in time to urinate due to physical or mental impairment such as arthritis.
  • Mixed incontinence: possessing more than one of the above classifications.

Enuresis— nocturnal incontinence usually experienced by children— has distinct and specific classifications.
