Oxygen (O\(_2\))

Required for aerobic respiration (as opposed to anaerobic respiration or fermentation). O\(_2\) is the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain.

Lack of necessary O\(_2\) to cells (such as via ischemia) causes hypoxia. Untreated hypoxia leads to cellular necrosis.
