Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Syndrome
Extreme dehydration due to hyperglycemia as glucose overloads nephrons, spills into the renal tubule, and draws in ECF water via osmosis.
The primary risk factor for HHS is unmanaged Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2).
Signs and symptoms of HHS include:
- Extreme hyperglycemia.
- Lethargy.
- Confusion and other neurologic deficits.
- Coma and death.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis is not a typical symptom of HHS due to the presence of some insulin in type-2 diabetics.
