Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)

Occurs when damage to blood vessels causes clots to form in the capillaries, which eventually travel to and damage the nephrons of the kidneys.

Symptoms of HUS depend on the cause. For HUS causes by E. Coli infection, symptoms include:

  • Bloody diarrhea.
  • Abdominal pain and cramping.
  • Vomiting.
  • Fever.

The same blood vessel damage breaks down RBCs, causing anemia. Those symptoms include:

  • Fatigue.
  • Bruising.
  • Unusual bleeding from nose, mouth, and in urine.
  • Hypertension.
  • Pedal edema.
  • Confusion, seizure, and stroke.
